Whenever a significant prize-giving event draws close, there’s always a clamor to include fresh award types to recognize overlooked contributions and satisfy the passions of followers dedicated to specific genres.
My colleague previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. The same goes for board games, which is someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward since similar to blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification for why my demand is the most urgent and important of all. This is the request: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it’s very subjective, and inevitably spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why movie academies steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents a necessary evil for the industry of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify as a single art form.
For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.
Existing Game Classification System
Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these six categories successfully include numerous genres, making space possible for most games within them.
Not so for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Think about these recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. What category would fit them between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.
Acknowledgment Issues
There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly that have no home in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested independent game categories.
- An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked completely during that awards season
- Another imaginative release received no nominations that year
- Well-received sorting experience got ignored in 2021
- Just some brain-teasers scraped into small studio or handheld classifications
Importance of Logic Titles
Commonly they're modest productions, but the art behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles count as most engaged experiences globally maintaining this status for an extended period.
The iconic tile-matching title competes with famous sandbox experiences competing to become highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.
The Solution and Justification
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. It would be easy to populate five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.
Restating the point, these are games that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Logic title developers function at the demanding boundary interactive creation, producing among the purest expressions of the video game form. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait decades.
